When the light is off, the coloring of the rattan is definitely lighter - I would say more like tan than dark brown. At first I didn't like it and was tempted to take a stain to it. But when you turn it on, it looks a lot more like the picture, and I wasn't sure I wanted it to look a lot darker. I receive a lot of compliments on it, and am very happy with the purchase. But just know that if you really want it darker, then I'd suggest getting the darker color, but I've come to really like the chai color.
