In this case, it is two pieces of relatively thick plastic sandwiching a low power light bulb. It seems to be thick enough and strong enough to take some level of abuse from kids throwing a football in the room. And bright enough, without being too bright, for reading and night light use.
Overall, my 9 year old loves it for the moment. Which was the whole intention.

This is for the Pokemon Pikachu Lamp. This type of lamp is really cool with Pikachu as the lamp itself. Light stands about 9". Produces a very good amount of light. The overall yellow color makes the majority of the light yellow, so it doesn't hurt your eyes. Just an overall cool lamp. Uses a standard 110V Electric outlet for power. Great gift for anyone who likes Pikachu or Pokemon...
